Streetscape Committee Update – 4/09/2016

Adam Brodsky
Deputy Town Supervisor, New Castle

The Town Board has to date created a Streetscape Committee made up of local merchants, members of the Architectural Review Board, designers, a representative from the Chamber of Commerce, and members of the Beautification Advisory Board. We have had numerous meetings over the past six to nine months with the Town’s outside professional staff of landscape architects and planners from WSP. These meetings included field trips to nearby communities of note with certain appealing redesigned Downtowns.

At the most recent meeting, the Streetscape Committee met to further discuss the ongoing design and implementation of the streetscape plans.

We reviewed in detail the layout of:

The Triangle intersection
Sidewalk configuration and width throughout Town
Plantings
Congregation areas located throughout downtown including the redesign of Marion Place, the areas in front of Great Stuff and Chappaqua Tavern and the proposed small park at the end of Lower King.
The meeting was very productive with the Committee coming to consensus on many facets of the plan for the Town Board’s ultimate approval. We are meeting again in two weeks to review the revised plans incorporating the changes from this meeting with an anticipated completion date for the streetscape plans in late May.

At the next meeting we hope to discuss pricing of the plan within the overall framework of the Town budget and tax cap. The Committee as well as the Town Board understand the importance of not “breaking” the tax cap and are doing everything in their power to design a project that is both aesthetically appealing and affordable within the Town budget.

I welcome community input in the process. Please feel free to email me atabrodsky@mynewcastle.org.
