Last week, the Town of New Castle Holocaust & Human Rights Committee had its’ first committee meeting of the year. We are already hard at work and are excited to share the dates of our annual community events:
December 7th at 7:30pm Human Rights Day Program
January 25th at 7:30pm International Holocaust Remembrance Day Program
April 19th at 7pm Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony
We would also like to share that starting this Sunday 9/18 at 8PM on PBS is the first segment of Ken Burns’ new three-part series called The U.S. and the Holocaust. The series explores how the American people struggled with the Holocaust, one of the greatest humanitarian crises of modern times. According to the movie’s website, the film “…also takes a candid look at the roles that eugenics and racism, as well as xenophobia and antisemitism, played during this crisis and throughout American history.” Ken Burns is a world renowned documentary filmmaker whose films have been awarded 16 Emmys and 2 Oscar nominations. From Mr. Burns’ website, “the late historian Stephen Ambrose said of his films, ‘More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source’. And Wynton Marsalis has called Ken ‘master of timing, and of knowing the sweet spot of a story, of how to ask questions to get to the basic human feeling and to draw out the true spirit of a given subject.’”
