The Numbers: Curve May be Flattening

Despite the significant numbers in terms of volume, from April 2^nd through April 7^th there has been a decrease in total daily patient hospitalizations – 1,427, 1,095, 574, 358, 656 and 586 respectively. According to Governor Cuomo, some hospitals are reporting more discharges than new patients. Unfortunately, during this same period, daily deaths steadily increased from 562, 630, 594, 599, and 731 to 779 today. In total, there have been 6,286 deaths in NYS of which 315 were Westchester County residents.

• 365,153 total tested 
• 25,095 tested on April 7^th
• 149, 316 total positive cases
• 10,453 positive cases on April 7^th

Westchester County

• 49,348 total tested
• 2,647 tested on April 7^th
• 15,887 total positive cases
• 1,083 positive cases on April 7^th

New Castle

• 70 total positive cases

Remember, the curve cannot flatten without all of us doing our part. Stay at home or, if you are outside, adhere to social distancing guidelines.

The Great Outdoors: Keep them Great by Keeping Your Distance

As a reminder, the trails in our public parks remain open. However, there are reports of people not social distancing by refusing to step aside or move out of the way for other hikers. Whether you are outdoors or inside a supermarket, wear a mask if you are potentially going to come in relatively close proximity to others. Simply, extend them the same courtesy you would expect. Keep in mind, if you need to park along the road far from the trailhead and outside the parking lot, it likely means the trails will be crowded – consider using a different park. Please use common sense and clean up both after your dog and yourself.
 

Pool Clubs and Private Property: Not a Place to Gather

There have been reports of young people gathering on the grounds of at least one of our private pool clubs. The New Castle Police have been notified and we have asked them to step up surveillance. Not only should you speak with your children to ensure they understand that they may be violating the Penal Law for Criminal Nuisance and Trespassing, but they are also flouting Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order. Further, they are selfishly demonstrating a willful indifference to the health of the community we all call home. Please speak to children and remind them that should they be summonsed for violating the law, not only will they only have themselves to blame, but will likely be quite ashamed of their conduct given the incessant messaging about social distancing by the federal, state, county and New Castle government.
 

Safety in the Streets: Drivers and Pedestrians Must Follow the Law

With brightening sun and warming temperatures, more of us are escaping the confines of our home to walk in town. As a reminder to newer and more experienced drivers alike, speeding and whipping around curves wasn’t acceptable before COVID-19 and it certainly isn’t now. Ignoring the fact that there are no meetings, sporting events or other gatherings you are running late for, have the courtesy to show some restraint and slow down. Similarly, walkers should follow the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidelines and walk facing traffic. Simply put, none of this is a heavy lift especially when it comes to the safety of friends, family members and neighbors.
 

Domestic Violence: Legal Options and Orders of Protection

One of the sad consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic is the increase in domestic violence, whether from a spouse, partner, child, sibling, parent or even a former boyfriend or girlfriend. The current crisis can fray relationships, exacerbate existing problems and create new issues. That said, abuse – physical or emotional – is never acceptable. If you are subject to domestic violence and in need of immediate help, do not hesitate to call 911. The New Castle Police Department is trained and ready to respond day or night. Your safety and that of your loved ones is always a priority.

Even with closures throughout Westchester County and the NYS Court System, know that should you need an order of protection, there is a mechanism to remotely file a petition and “appear” before a judge with or without an attorney. In addition to the police and courts, there are other resources available. For example, My Sisters’ Place, among other services, strives to end domestic violence by providing free education, outreach, and confidential supportive and legal services, throughout Westchester County.

Remember, there is nothing shameful about being a victim of abuse. You have rights, the means to protect yourself should you pursue them, and the support of others ready to stand by your side. 

Reminder: Citizen Assistance Registry

The New Castle Citizen Assistance Registry is a way for residents to let the Town know that they may need some extra help during this crisis. The New Castle Police Department and our Town Social Worker use this list to make regular phone calls to residents -- to check in and make sure everyone has the help they need. We are all in this together! 

Unemployment: Increase in Payment and Extension of Benefits

Governor Cuomo announced that those who are receiving unemployment benefits will see an increase of $600 per week and an extension of unemployment benefits for an additional thirteen weeks. More information and to learn how to file a claim is available here. 

Exercise Your Right to Vote: Everyone can by Absentee Ballot

By way of Executive Order, all voters can vote by absentee ballot on June 23^rd and need not go to their voting place. You can apply for an absentee ballot here.
