STAR (School Tax Relief)

What’s new?

There have been some changes in how certain homeowners will apply for STAR, and in how they receive their STAR benefit. The STAR program continues to provide much-needed property tax relief to New York State’s homeowners.

New applicants who qualify for STAR will register with New York State instead of applying with their Assessor.  Those qualified will receive a STAR credit in the form of a check, rather than receiving a property tax exemption. The dollar value of the credit will be the same as the property tax exemption.

If you are receiving a STAR exemption and purchased your current home prior to June 1, 2014, you don’t need to register; you will continue to receive the STAR Exemption.


If you purchased your home or applied after June 1, 2015, then you need to register with New York State to receive the STAR credit.

When should I register?

We recommend that you register as soon as possible after you purchase and move into your home. If you register by July 1st, New York State will make every effort to mail the check to you by September 30th. If you register after July 1, New York State will mail the check to you as soon as they can. Registrations will be accepted for three years from the income tax filing deadline for the year that the credit covers. For example, to claim the STAR credit for 2016, you must register by April 15, 2020. However, the sooner you register, the sooner you will receive your STAR check.
